Side effects


For the temporary relief of mild pain to moderate pain associated with arthralgia, dental pain, dysmenorrhea, headache, myalgia, and/or premenstrual or menstrual cramps.

For the the temporary relief of mild to moderate pain associated with headache, minor arthritis pain, muscle aches, and/or colds; for the treatment of fever. 

NOTE: Each powder contains approximately 60 mg of potassium (see How Supplied).

Oral dosage (powder formulations)

Adults, Adolescents, and Children >= 12 years

Place powder of 1 packet on tongue and follow with full glass of water, or may stir powder into a glass of water or other liquid. May repeat every 6 hours. Do not exceed 4 powders per 24 hours.

Oral dosage (headache and extra-strength tablet formulations)

Adults, Adolescents, and Children >= 12 years

For self-medication, take 2 tablets, caplets, or geltabs PO every 6 hours as needed. Maximum of 8 tablets, caplets, or geltabs per 24 hours. For pain, do not take for more than 10 days unless directed by a physician.

For the treatment of migraine.

Oral dosage (migraine tablet formulations ONLY)


For self-treatment, 2 tablets or caplets PO. If symptoms persist or worsen, seek medical attention. Do not exceed 1 dose in 24 hours unless directed by a doctor. Prescribers may instruct patients to take 2 tablets or caplets PO every 6 hours while symptoms persist; not to exceed 4 doses in 24 hours.

Children >= 12 years and Adolescents

Not advised for self-treatment; prescriber may instruct, 2 tablets or caplets PO every 6 hours, not to exceed 4 doses in 24 hours.



NSAID allergy. Varicella, vaccinia in children and teenagers. 3rdtrimester of pregnancy.Warnings/Precautions:

Reye's syndrome. Persistent or unresponsive headache. Hypertension. Cardiovascular disease. Asthma. Peptic ulcer. GI bleeding disorders. Liver cirrhosis. Hepatic or renal impairment. Discontinue if signs/symptoms of GI bleed, migraine is not relieved or worsens after first dose, tinnitus, loss of hearing, new or unexpected symptoms develop, or severe skin reactions (eg, skin reddening, blisters, rash) occur. Elderly (?60yrs). Pregnancy. Nursing mothers.

Stomach ache



Feeling jittery

Trouble sleeping

Excedrin can have serious side effects. If you have any of these side effects, stop taking Excedrin and call your doctor right away:

Rash or hives

Trouble breathing or wheezing

Persistent stomach pain

Bloody or black stools

Unusual bleeding


Ringing in your ears

Swelling of the face, eyes, lips, tongue, or throat

Let your doctor know if you have fever or pain that gets worse while taking Excedrin, or if any painful areas become red or swollen. Also contact your doctor if you develop any new symptoms while taking Excedrin.
